Check out PaperBackSwap.com, same idea, larger selection, better site & better navigation. I've used it for years and couldn't be happier. The same people also run SwapACD.com and SwapADVD.com.

You wrote:the 2:1 rule is separate from the points accounting, so it seems like over time you’ll accumulate more points than you can possibly use unless you’re mooching books from overseas (which cost extra points)

You got it backwards, you need to send at least one book for every two books you send out.

You can in fact create the dot paper just by printing a pdf they supply; it's just likely to be more expensive than buying it from them for all the usual reasons that printing on your own printer is costly per page.

Do you know why the paper is so special. Printing dots should be easily achieved with a 600 dpi printer.
Can they be created using litho inks

Hm. You're right, I didn't look at the y-axis values. It could be possible that while the absolute numbers of boys named Joshua dropped from over 10,000 per million to 6,000 per million, the rank climbed...but that's still startling, since that means that either there were no other names that were even close, or if there were they also dropped sharply.

Actually, Josh, I don't think it's an error. The graph shows the total number of kids named Joshua. The RANK of the name can still go up while the numbers go down if, as I believe is the case, the total number of different names is increasing. All kinds of new names and alternate spellings are cropping up as people who went to school with ten Jennifers and eight Heathers try desperately to give their kids a unique name. Of course, some names have also gone excinct (witness the tragic death of "Ethel"), but I think they're being created faster than they can die.

Another thing that could be happening is that the distribution could be evening out. One name is still ranked ahead of another whether it's ahead by one or one thousand in actual numbers.

Well, for one thing, because there are several centuries of philosophical writing out there where "begging the question" is used in the petitio principii sense, and if we give up on it that makes it that much harder to understand. I don't think including or excluding the definite article with hoi polloi or quibbling about the plural of octopus make the same kind of semantic difference. My beef about begging the question is that it takes a useful term of art and turns it into, well pretentious mush. It doesn't seem to me that people who say "begging the question" in the non-technical sense really mean anything by it, and it doesn't really seem to me to crop up in casual writing but only when people are trying to sound deep and thoughtful. Maybe it is just snobbery on my part, and I shouldn't read it as someone pompously parroting half-understood technical phrases.
